Where Curiosity Leads: Students Explore Science, Storytelling, and College Credit in the Canyon

Give high school students the space to ask questions, and the guidance to pursue them, and discovery follows. The Cottonwood Crossing Summer Institute (CCSI) offers high school students a week-long, hands-on learning experience in Cottonwood Canyon State Park along the John Day River.

Guided by Eastern Oregon University faculty, participants explore science and storytelling while earning college credit.

“CCSI is built around curiosity,” said Eric Carlson, CCSI coordinator. “Students ask questions, test ideas, and discover answers for themselves.”

Students conduct stream surveys, identify macroinvertebrates and study plant ecosystems in the field, applying concepts in real time. Courses also include visual storytelling, where students use photography and narrative to document and interpret their surroundings.

Scholarships and financial support are available. Applications are open until May 15. More information and application details are available at www.revcenter.org/cottonwood-crossing-summer-institute.

The program combines scientific inquiry with creative expression, helping students understand not only how natural systems work, but why they matter.Participants live and learn alongside peers from across the region, building confidence, independence and connection.

“Students leave with college credit, but more importantly, they leave knowing how to think, question and explore,” Carlson said.

CCSI is coordinated by the Rural Engagement and Vitality Center in partnership with Eastern Oregon University and regional partners.
